Carpet Basics

Choosing carpet can sometimes feel overwhelming.  Having a basic understanding of the different types and styles of carpet available can make the process easier.  Understanding the different terms used to describe specific styles can help when selecting the best type of carpet for your home.

Carpet is made using fibers, also called yarns that are woven together into a material backing.  This creates small loops of yarn along the surface referred to as the carpets “pile.”  If the loops are left uncut, the carpet is called a loop pile carpet; if the loops are cut, it is referred to as a cut pile carpet.  Some carpets have a combination of both techniques and are referred to as cut and loop carpeting.

Another important distinction between carpets is the fiber used in their construction.  This fiber can be either natural or synthetic.  Most carpets made today use synthetic fibers including nylon, polypropylene or polyester. Natural fiber carpets are usually made of wool, cotton, silk, or bamboo.  The material used and method of construction create a wide variety of carpet types and styles.
